Miss Gilbert’s Weblog

Welcome to Academic and Accelerated Biology

Policies and Procedures

I. Required Calculator

A scientific calculator, capable of scientific notation and log functions, is required for Advanced Chemistry. (ie. Texas Instruments TI-30Xa, TI-30X IIS, Casio FX260, FX300MS). Graphing calculators are prohibited unless otherwise mentioned. All students must have their own calculator for quizzes and tests. If available, a calculator may be “rented” from the teacher for 5% of total grade on that quiz or test.

II. Homework

Homework will not be collected for a grade. It is therefore your responsibility to do the assigned problems in order to learn the material and prepare for the exams. Designated days will be set aside to go over selected homework problems in class. At such times, individual students may be assigned specific problems to solve for the class. This will be graded as class participation.

III. Quizzes

If you expect to miss a quiz due to a scheduled school activity (athletics, choir, class trip, etc.), you must take the quiz before you leave for the activity unless given permission to take the quiz the day after.

Make-up quizzes must be made up the next day—either at lunch or during a free period. If it is impossible to make it up during one of these times, the student must speak to the teacher before lunch time and ask for permission to make up the quiz during class time. Students who do not make up quizzes promptly will receive a zero on that quiz. Students missing more than one day of class must speak to the teacher before lunch time on the day of their return to schedule a make-up quiz. General rule: If the class knows about a quiz, expect to take it ASAP.

IV. Tests

If you miss a test because of illness, it must be made up ASAP during a free period (lunch, study hall, etc.)—not during regular class time.

If you expect to miss a test because of a scheduled school activity (athletics, choir, class trip, etc.), it must be taken on your time before the activity unless permission is granted to take the test the day after.

If you are absent the day before a test, you will still be required to take the test on the regular day if no new material was covered on the days you’re absent.

V. Do Now/ Participation

A. Do Nows may be graded out of 10 pts (ü+ is full credit, a ü9 is a 90%, ü8 is 80% and so forth)

B. Class participation will also be based on presentation of assigned homework problems, class behavior, punctuality, and adherence to the dress code.

C. Pop quizzes will occasionally be given to help you prepare for the AP exam. These are for your own edification.

VI. Labs

If you miss a lab for an excused absence, we will try to set up an appointment to make it up during a lunch period.

VII. Midterm and Final Exams

NO EXEMPTIONS for the midterm. If you take the AP Exam, you may be eligible for exemption from the final.
